I wonder why the bigger companies take so many shortcuts on round robins and velocity layers. The included PZM and chamber reverb channels don’t really bring the same sense of added realism and gluing effect as a good, unprocessed ambience sound would. Mixosaurus’ biggest problem to me is the lack of proper room mics channel and bleed. This means that the software isn’t trying to force you to play on a certain style to get a believable performance a series of soft hits on the bell of a crash cymbal will sound just as realistic as a powerful snare and tom fill. The great thing about the philosophy behind Mixosaurus is that every articulation and drum kit piece has the same level of detail as for velocity layers and round robins. Unfortunately, as far as I know there has been no other serious attempt to create a virtual acoustic drumset as thoroughly as Mixosaurus does. I’ve been using the good old Mixosaurus for a long time now, but I’ve started to think that maybe it would be nice to get a replacement for it.
